LES "CHANTS THERMIQUES" (“THERMAL CHANTS”)

Michel MOGLIA

Born in 1945
Travelled for two years in Niger, with the idea of an artistic “give and take”.
Discovers the dancers of the region.
He is initiated by nomadic people in the songs of the “straight “ flute.

Utilizes natural elements of all forms for his creative works
1988: Purchased by the National Fund of Contemporary Art: A shield hardened by fireb.

The analogy between the appearance of sounds, -linked on one hand to combustion, and on the other hand to the inhaling and exhaling of breathe-, “lit the flame” for Michel to create in 1989 the first Orgue a Feu. In 1990, with the help of the “Centre National des Arts Plastiques” (the National Center for Decorative Arts), he staged an exceptional performance in the Thermal Center of Perm, in the ex-USSR: a giant fire organ, created from oleoduc tubes, which allowed him to harness the energy from the Thermal Center for the first Thermal Chants.
After, Michel alternated between research and creation, for public events and spectacles. More specifically: in Belo-Horizonte, Sao-Paulo, Istanbul, in the International Festival of Baalbek (Lebanon), and lastly at the City of Music, or at the foot of the Geode of the City of Sciences, which are both in Paris.

Technical Information :

Each Thermal Chant is a creation that takes into consideration different parameters: the nature of the event and of the public, characteristics of the site, probable weather conditions, etc…. A visit to the site is thus imperative. The technical conditions (and financial) depend on the final choices for each event.

General characteristics

The Event :

The events are to occur at night.
During the daylight, a performance is possible if it is held inside a large area: a large factory, a grotto, or in some kind of dark “inflammable” area which could house the Fire Organ with the utmost of security precautions. Good acoustics is not imperative.
A joint venture with choirs, musicians and local artists can be envisioned on the condition that there is a plan and an artistic goal. If this is to be the case, it is necessary to have a minimum of two days of rehearsals, on site.

Basic Team Needed :

5 people
- 4 musicians to play the Thermal Instruments
- 1 sound engineer

General Technical Information :

The Fire Organ is made of, in fact, a grouping of five, separate metallique structures, supported by roughly 200 stainless (inox) tubes as well as titanium and glass of different lengths and different dimensions.

Volume Transported: 15 M3 (metric cube) – depending on the variance of each installation
Weight: 1800 KG -depending on the variance of each installation

Recommended Staging:
- Façade: 30 meters
- Depth: 8 meters
- Height: 2 meters
- Background Clearance: 4 meters

Amount of time of set-up on the stage (including the sound set-up):

Stage Installation: 9 hours
Time to break-down the stage: 4 hours

Electic feed needed for the Event, on average:
Lights: a minimum to supplement the light from the Event (lighting, by a fire of wood)
Sound: 16 amperes per phase + grounding + neutral around the border of the stage, with a protective electrical cabinet. (This feed must imperatively be separate).

4 people must be available for the organizer to disassemble and reload our vehicles at the scene, immediately following the Event.

Sound :

The sound specifications depend on our technical information schema which we draw up for each Event. The Fire Organ generates a level of bass frequencies up to 40 hertz, continuously, and in power: A sound system adapted to our needs, with big broadcasting (sound projection) capabilities, including serious reinforcements, are absolutely necessary.

Financial conditions :

From the time that the details of the Event have been worked out in all its detail, (technically and artistically), a detailed proposal will be sent to the organizers.
This proposal will include the charge for the transport, the set-up of the stage, pay for the help for the unloading and loading of the equipment, all expenses of our team (room and board) at the site.
